What exactly is a split sheet?
A split sheet is a written agreement that outlines exactly who owns what percentage of a song. It lists every contributor, their specific role, and their share of the master and publishing rights.

What is the difference between master and publishing rights?

A Performing Rights Organization (or PRO) is a company that collects royalties for you. The main ones in the U.S. are ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, and GMR.
Their job is to track down every time your song is played on the radio, on TV, in a restaurant, or streamed online. They collect the money from those places and pay it out to you, the songwriter. If you’re not signed up with a PRO, you are leaving money on the table.
What do typical song splits look like?
This is the most important conversation you’ll have in a studio session, and it’s always a negotiation. As an artist, knowing the standard practices empowers you to have that conversation with confidence. The splits are divided into the two rights we discussed: the Master (the recording) and the Publishing (the song).
Here’s a simple breakdown of how the key players are typically compensated:
The Performing Artist is the “face” of the song. For their performance on the master recording, they often negotiate 12-20% “points” (paid after expenses). If they also co-wrote the lyrics or melody, they’ll get a share of the publishing as well.
The Songwriter, who handles the lyrics and melody, typically gets 50% of the Publishing. They don’t usually get a share of the master unless they are also the performing artist.
The Producer, who creates the beat and shapes the overall sound, also typically gets 50% of the Publishing (splitting it with the songwriter). For the master, they usually negotiate 3-8% “points”.
A Featured Artist who adds a guest verse might get 1-3% “points” on the master and up to 25% of the Publishing if they wrote their own part.
It’s crucial to understand that for independent artists, a more direct 50/50 master split between the artist and producer is also very common. The key takeaway is that the 50% publishing share for the “song” is almost always split between the person who wrote the lyrics/melody and the person who made the beat.
